  3.     DIED. Michael Harrington, 61, pre-eminent U.S. socialist and
  4. author of The Other America, the 1962 polemic that sparked the War
  5. on Poverty; of cancer; in Larchmont, N.Y. His study of Appalachian
  6. miners and California migrant workers convinced him that America's
  7. poor, "for reasons beyond their control, cannot help themselves"
  8. and were trapped in a "culture of poverty." Moved by The Other
  9. America, President Kennedy, three days before his death,
  10. commissioned the study that led to the Johnson Administration's
  11. Great Society programs.
